Is Party Politics Damaging Bermuda’s Democracy?

Former One Bermuda Alliance Senator, former party chairman and independent election candidate Justin Mathias joins The Daily Hour for a candid conversation about the state of party politics, political leadership and the future of democracy in Bermuda.

In a recent opinion piece published in The Royal Gazette, titled Infighting in Both Parties Is Damaging Democracy, Mathias raises concerns about internal divisions within both the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) and One Bermuda Alliance (OBA). He questions whether political parties have become too focused on internal power struggles at the expense of representing the people they were elected to serve.

Drawing on his experience inside the OBA and his decision to run as an independent candidate, Mathias shares his perspective on political accountability, party loyalty, leadership disputes and whether Bermuda’s current political system is delivering the representation voters deserve.

We also explore the responsibility of voters, the potential role of independent candidates, and whether Bermuda needs a fundamental rethink of how political parties operate. Beyond the disagreements and personalities, what should political leadership look like if the priority is improving the lives of Bermudians?
