Following a case that captured national attention in Bermuda, we’re having a broader conversation about the responsibility that comes with reporting and sharing information we know to be false.
With social media, WhatsApp, and other digital platforms allowing information to spread across the island in minutes, false claims can have consequences far beyond the original post or message, from creating public alarm to consuming significant public resources.
As recent matters are now before the courts, we’re not debating the guilt or innocence of anyone involved. Instead, we’re asking what responsibility each of us should have for the information we put into the public domain.
