Labour Day: How Far Have We Really Come?

As we celebrate Labour Day, we recognize the generations of workers and labour unions who fought for many of the things we can easily take for granted today. Those include better wages, safer working conditions, benefits, protections, and greater rights in the workplace.

There’s no question that progress has been made. But how much further do we still have to go?

Despite increasingly diverse workplaces, questions remain around who holds positions of influence and decision-making, pay equity, opportunities for advancement, and whether race, gender, and other factors continue to impact a person’s experience in the workplace.

This Labour Day, we’re not only reflecting on how far we’ve come, but asking what true workplace equity should look like moving forward. It’s imperative for us to ensure that people are rewarded fairly for their work, ability, and results and that everyone has a genuine opportunity to succeed.
